The “augmented car”, or how AI is redefining mobility

Published on

What if Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be your best ally for improving your car journeys? At Renault Group, AI is more than just automation—it acts like a co-pilot. Luc Julia, Chief Scientific Officer at Renault Group and Chief AI Officer at Ampere, describes how this proactive AI is redefining the on-board experience.

Renault Group

At Renault Group, AI is far from being a futuristic gadget. It’s already up and running, poised to deliver a safer, smoother, and friendlier experience inside the vehicle. For Luc Julia, the arrival of AI in the cabin heralds a new era: “We already had it outside our cars; now it’s slipping inside to respond to our requests—and even anticipate them.”

AI that understands you

On models like Renault 5 E-Tech electric, this goal is materializing through Reno: a virtual co-pilot that learns about you in order to assist you better. Like a next generation “cricket” on your shoulder, Reno makes life on board easier: it can help you understand the vehicle’s features, adjust brightness and interior temperature, or find a nearby charging station. And since it continuously learns from your habits, it becomes smarter over time: it sends you reminders, suggests content tailored to your tastes, and can even help you drive more efficiently. This is our vision of artificial intelligence on board: an AI capable of going beyond mere assistance to become a true traveling companion. “What’s really interesting about AI is its proactive nature,” Luc Julia points out. “One of the things it does very well is anticipate dangers, ensuring a safer and more reassuring driving experience”

The cabin of the future

When asked about his vision of the “augmented car” in ten years, Luc Julia imagines vehicles that are ever safer, more comfortable, and more connected. AI will radically change the driving experience, turning the car into a space for exploration and entertainment. Imagine a car that—beyond transporting you safely—enhances your journey like a tour guide: it provides real-time information about your surroundings and the places you pass, and helps you discover hidden treasures along the way. For families, AI could generate interactive games that entertain children while stimulating their creativity and learning during the ride. The possibilities are endless, but the goal remains the same: thanks to AI, turning the car into an intelligent companion, capable of adapting to your desires.

Multiple artificial intelligences

For Luc Julia, there isn’t just one AI, but a multitude of AIs. These are artificial intelligences adapted to each use case, embedded in our vehicles but also employed throughout the Group, from our factories to our support functions. AIs that are not meant to replace humans, but to accompany them and free their minds. AIs that evolve constantly, which will continue to reshape how we work, how we interact with vehicles, and how we rethink our vision of mobility. And this is just the beginning. Title
